After days of unrest in Eswatini, calm is gradually returning as some shops start to reopen - even if only for a few hours. Many of the big retailers are still closing early leaving desperate would-be shoppers outside without managing to buy anything. There is still a 6 p.m. curfew and a strong police presence with roadblocks on main roads. Demonstrations escalated radically at the end of June 2021 as protesters defied a dusk-to-dawn curfew to take to the streets, looting and torching buildings linked to King Mswati III - Africa's last absolute monarch - and demanding political reform.
