Description
The remains of Filipinos killed in Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s drug war are starting to be exhumed as the leases on their graves expire and poor families struggle to renew the contracts.
A five-year lease for an “apartment” tomb costs about 5,000 pesos ($100), a fortune for many families whose dead loved ones were the breadwinners.
Father Flavie Villanueva is helping families retrieve the bones of their relatives with the aim of having them cremated and put in a columbarium – a massive challenge given that thousands of grave leases are set to expire in the coming years.
