Description
"Those rights of mine were seriously violated" says journalist Szabolcs Panyi after claims that Hungary used Israeli-made spyware to target journalists and others. The claims have increased concerns about media freedom and rule-of-law in the EU member governed by nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Critics in and outside of Hungary have long accused Orban of chipping away at the rule of law since he took power in 2010 and undermining democratic institutions, including free media. But press reports that accuse Hungary as the only EU country to have used the Pegasus spyware technology to infiltrate some 300 smartphones of journalists, lawyers, businesspeople and others have caused fresh outrage.
