Elitsa Storey was born in Bulgaria with severe physical disabilities and was left shortly after birth in the hands of the country's crumbling care-home system. When she was five she was adopted in the US where she was able to get the care she needed and now, aged 33, she divides her life with her husband and small daughter between the US and New Zealand. Her story made headlines in Bulgaria when she came back and managed to reunite with part of her Bulgarian family, who had thought her dead. In contrast to Elitsa's happy ending, hundreds of adolescents who weren't adopted because of their severe physical and mental disabilities continue to live in small institutions in Bulgaria, without any prospect of leaving.
