Description
After World War Two, tens of thousands of Jews who had survived the Holocaust, sailed on overcrowded boats from Europe across the Mediterranean hoping to establish a Jewish state, in what would eventually become Israel. However, British soldiers then ruling Palestine stopped many of the boats. Between August 1946 and February 1949, more than 52,000 Jews were put into a dozen detention camps on the island of Cyprus, then also under British rule. Seventy-five years on this August since the first camps opened on Cyprus, Arie Zeev Raskin, the chief rabbi of Cyprus, is building a museum he says will help "teach the next generation" about the history.
