Sri Lanka's drive to become the world's first 100 percent organic food producer threatens its prized tea industry and has triggered fears of a wider crop disaster that could deal a further blow to the beleaguered economy. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa ordered a ban on chemical fertiliser earlier this year to buttress his drive to become the first country in the world to go completely organic. Even experts appointed by Rajapaksa say an overnight shift is not feasible and could lead to severe reduction in tea, the island's main export commodity, as well other crops by the end of this year.
