Description
The newly reopened 'Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial' near Washington, a mansion where the top Confederate general during the 1861 to 1865 US Civil War lived for decades before leading the Southern Army, now aims to tell a more nuanced story of the estate by highlighting the experience of enslaved residents as well. "Through the rehabilitation, we’ve put effort, energy, resources in understanding how to better elevate the story of the enslaved people," says Aaron LaRocca, a national park ranger.
