Description
Research by UC Berkeley and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has found that plants with longer roots store more carbon dioxide than regular plants with smaller roots. If plants have roots measuring a few feet long, carbon stays much longer in the soil and is naturally distributed and absorbed by microorganisms. Stored carbon is also less likely to be disturbed by human or animal interaction, like plowing, which releases CO2 into the atmosphere. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
