Description
South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma has been placed on medical parole just two months into a 15 month jail term for contempt of court. Zuma, 79, has been hospitalised since August 6 at a health facility outside the prison where he had been incarcerated for ignoring a court order to testify before a judicial panel probing corruption during his nine-year tenure, which ended in 2018. The Executive Secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution says he expects Zuma's legal team to use medical parole "as a pretext to say that he is not fit to stand trial on these fraud and corruption charges".
