Two days before 9/11, an Al-Qaeda suicide squad posing as journalists assassinated Ahmad Shah Massoud, the so-called 'Lion of Panjshir' and last major commander resisting the Taliban in northern Afghanistan at the time. Massoud still holds a special place in the Afghan imagination, and his image can be seen throughout Kabul, though since the Taliban swept back to power some portraits have now been defaced.
