Description
On August 11, 1958 it's on the record that the Chicago Cubs played the Los Angeles Dodgers--Cubs 9 Dodgers 3. What isn't well known--until now--is that the Cubs traveled south to San Diego to play the Pacific League San Diego Padres in an exhibition game at Westgate Park. Oh what we find in our archives!! Here's the proof! TV 8's Lute Mason interviewed Cubs legend Ernie Banks. 34 home runs, his batting average, his career in the major leagues, the team, and much more. Fascinating. Fantastic. A real gem buried in our archives for much too long.
Original scripts: Last night the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 in an exhibition game at Westgate Park...Manager Bob Scheffing shown here on the right started his ace righthander Moe Drabowsky...who has been ailing the past month...Drabowsky looked good for his 3 inning stint...Cubs dugout...a fast rising team...Bobby Thompson an old veteran of the game and Al Dark who came from St. Louis a few months ago spark the Cubs and keep the new young ballplayers in line...Mgr. George Metkovich of the Padres whose team is in 3rd place 3 games behind Phoenix. Cubs play in L.A. tomorrow.
A crowd of more than 75 hundred fans jammed Westgate Park last night to see major league baseball in action. The Chicago Cubs, currently in sixth place in the National League beat the fumbling Padres 8 to nothing. Right fielder Lee Walls, with 21 homers this season demonstrates his form. The Cubs best pitcher Moe Drabowsky and Manager Bob Scheffing talked over strategy, and then Drabowski shows his winning form after returning from an injury. Emmett Ashford gets in the act on how to call a player out.
