The smash hit The Who's Tommy premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse on July 9, 1992. Pete Townshend wrote the rock opera in 1969. Nearly 25 years later he brought it to the stage with director Des McAnuff. Townshend said The Who was very lucky that it worked because it was an important step for them artistically and a critical financial breakthrough for a group who up to that point had been known for wearing funny English clothes and pop art outfits and smashing guitars.
