Margaret “Midge” Costanza was a political and social activist who turned the primary lady to carry the title of Assistant to the President for Public Liaison for President Jimmy Carter. She was nicknamed “the President’s window to the nation”, consulting with a wide selection of teams. Twenty months into the job she resigned amidst controversy over her relentless combat for the rights of gays, seniors, and ladies.
In 1992, she ran Barbara Boxer’s profitable marketing campaign for U.S. Senator. In 1994, when News 8’s Maria Velasquez profiled her for Women’s History Month, Costanza was operating her personal political and communications agency in San Diego. In 2004, she turned a professor at San Diego State University and was working with the Political Science and Women’s Studies departments of SDSU and the Political Science division of the University of California, San Diego to develop the Midge Costanza Institute. The Institute is principally geared toward inspiring younger folks to develop into lively in political and social causes.
