The airport of the Canary Island of La Palma stands empty, its departures board showing nothing but cancelled flights, after clouds of thick ash from the Cumbre Vieja volcano forced the island's airport to close for the second time since the volcano erupted last month. The lasty time the airport was briefly shut was on September 25 after a thick cloud of black ash forced airlines to cancel flights; although it reopened a day later, flights did not resume until September 29.
