They're part of the city's landscape, wandering the streets to collect recyclable cans and bottles: the 'canners' of New York are one of the faces of extreme precariousness. Laurentino, an 80-year-old Mexican, works from 6am to 5pm six days a week, to redeem 5 cents per can collected. Without the help of his daughters, that would be barely enough to survive.
