Ex-cop Eric Adams, who fought racial discrimination within the police, was elected New York's next mayor on Tuesday and will become just the second African American to lead the United States's largest city.
"I was beaten by police and sat in a precinct holding cell, certain that my future was already decided," Adams says.
"And now I will be the person in charge of that precinct and every other precinct in the city of New York, because I'm going to be the Mayor of the City of New York."
