Description
Multiracial people in Brazil are increasingly identifying as black, after being taught to reject their race for years as being black was stigmatized and considered "ugly". Brazil, which is celebrating Black Consciousness Day Saturday, struggles with structural racism and the legacy of slavery, which it only abolished in 1888 -- the last country in the Americas to do so.
And quarterly surveys carried out by the IBGE with a representative sample of the population show that this trend has been confirmed in recent years. The most recent, from the second quarter of 2021, reports 45.9% of mixed race, 8.8% of black and 44.2% of white. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
