Description
The African Union's 'Great Green Wall' project takes root in Niger, hoping to transform the Simiri plateau from a desolate landscape to a haven for flora and fauna. Niger contributes mainly by planting white gum and Bauhinia rufescens trees, two drought-resistant species that can grow 12 metres tall.
Earthen embakements that hold in rainwater around the saplings are also being built by locals to give the trees their best chance at survivaly in this harsh climate.
The project aims to restore 100 million hectares of dry land by 2030 along an 8,000-kilometre strip stretching from Senegal in the west to Djibouti in the east. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
