No statistical explosion, at least on the surface, but a sense of increased vulnerability and a rising number of unsolved deaths. Women in Turkey say they feel vulnerable to violence since their country denounced the only international treaty meant to protect them. The landmark Istanbul Convention came into force in 2014 and paved the way for a Europe-wide legal framework to tackle, prevent and prosecute violence against women, but Turkey abruptly withdrew in March following a decree by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
