Activists protest peacefully against the construction of a fourth cruise ship pier on the southeastern Mexican island of Cozumel after the project was approved the previous week by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), despite experts warning that it puts coral reefs, fauna and marine currents at risk. Before the pandemic, the cruise industry was Cozumel's main economic activity, with more than 100,000 people dependent on it to some extent, either directly or indirectly, according to officials.
