After the arrival of the first rains of winter, pink flamingos 'Phoenicopterus roseus' find refuge until March in the Lake Aliki, a reservoir of water that dries up in summer and gets transformed into a vast plain of salt, which fills up with water in winter with the arrival of a large fauna of these migratory animals. These flamingos, which migrate to Africa to spend the winter there, take a dip each autumn in this lake which occupies an area of 2.2 square kilometres, in search of the small Artemia shrimp (Artemia salina) and other crustaceans.
