Description
The Taliban promised to bring peace, but fear reigns above all in the eastern city of Jalalabad in the Afghan province of Nangarhar, hit by Islamic State group attacks and reprisals, and with corpses appearing mysteriously in rivers.
While the head of the Nangarhar intelligence says that the Islamic State "no longer exists" in the province, the Taliban are accused of clandestinely eliminating their enemies. The United Nations attributes at least 72 murders to the Taliban, including 50 suspected IS members in Nangarhar.
"Very often, it is innocent people who are caught, and sometimes killed," says analyst Ibraheem Bahiss, who warns that this indiscriminate Taliban crackdown on Salafists -- an austere branch of Sunni Islam -- risks strengthening rather than weakening IS. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
