Description
Images of the first tsunami waves striking Tonga after the eruption on January 15, with the plume of ash rising above the horizon from the powerful eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano last Saturday. The boom from the eruption can be heard as waves pour over the harbour foreshore and inundate the surrounding area. According to the United Nations, the waves eventually impacted more than 80 percent of the population of the country, with cleanup efforts continuing. IMAGES
