Description
India’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh on Thursday begins a seven-phase election to choose a new government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party will be seeking re-election, led by its chief minister in the state, Yogi Adyitanath.
A polarising Hindu monk, he has been accused of encouraging vigilante violence against the minority Muslim population and introducing discriminatory laws to marginalise the community.
"Injustice is at its peak under Yogi's government,” said Shahbuddin from Meerut, a city in Uttar Pradesh, whose brother died in violence in 2019 over India’s citizenship law, widely seen as anti-Muslim.
"We're scared that if this government stays, they will kill our brothers, our kids and us."
