Description
A Czech group dedicated to collecting oral histories of the recent past has switched its focus to something less historical, if no less historic: making flak jackets and other items of military and medical aid to be sent to Ukraine. In normal times, the Post Bellum (Latin for "After the War") organisation normally records the memories of people who remember World War II and the four decades that Czechoslovakia spent under the totalitarian communist rule steered by Moscow. After Russia invaded Ukraine, the NGO shifted its focus to supplying protective military gear to the Ukrainians. It employs volunteers ranging from students to managers, and has so far supplied 1,783 flak jackets, 170 helmets and 176 pairs of boots to the war effort, as well as medical material worth almost a million euros. In addition, its charity campaign has so far spent almost three million euros on the aid. "We are able to transport the gear we make today to the Kyiv front within 24-36 hours," project coordinator Martin Ocknecht proudly proclaims. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
