Description
Sri Lanka's most sacred elephant who carried a golden casket of relics at an annual Buddhist pageant dies aged 68, sparking an outpouring of national grief.
Nadungamuwa Raja was the most important among 100 elephants used in the festival at the Temple of the Tooth in the city of Kandy in central Sri Lanka.
"Losing such a valuable animal is a loss to the Temple of the Tooth and to the entire country," said Pradeep Nilanga Dela, chief lay custodian at the temple. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
