In Venezuela, two of the biggest and most awarded rum companies employ women master blenders, who are responsible for the flavour and meticulous blends that make up each drink, each bottle being a combination of rums of different ages. As rum master blender position is held worldwide mostly by men, Carmen Lopez de Bastidas, master rum blender at the Carupano distillery, explains it wasn't easy for her, as she "had to face the belief that it is a male job". Likewise, Nancy Duarte, experienced rum blender at Santa Teresa distillery, says she feels "proud" of educating younger generations, despite encountering some "jealousy" early in her career.
