Description
The sunny seaside resort of Antalya in the south of Turkey relies heavily on custom from Russia and its neighbours: according to the Deputy General Manager of the Pine Beach of Hotel, 57% of the resort's 9 million tourists came from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus last year. But since Russia's invasion of pro-Western Ukraine, tourists are now afraid of being stuck far from Moscow. Although Turkey has kept flights open with Russia, dozens of Western countries have closed their airspace to Russian aircraft, whilst Russian Visa and Mastercard bank cards are now unusable abroad. And even more so than the Russians, Ukrainian tourists - 2 million visitors to Turkey last year - are likely to be missed this summer on the beaches of Antalya. All of which adds up to what Antalya's hoteliers fear may become an avalanche of cancellations for the summer season. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
