"By using less nitrogen and less herbicide", farmers "earn a better living", says Vincent Bretagnolle, a research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). In the Deux-Sèvres region, scientists are working with volunteer farmers to reduce the use of cancer-causing pesticides and chemical fertilisers, which are polluting the water and are becoming increasingly expensive.
