Juan Villamizar sits connected to a dialysis machine at a public health centre in Caracas, after a long search for a slot. Hypertensive and diabetic, a rise in blood pressure sent him to a hospital emergency room, where he spent more than 20 days in hospital. Doctors informed his relatives that his kidneys were functioning at 10%. A private centre is impossible for his family in Venezuela, where three out of four people live in extreme poverty.
