At the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Elena sent her children away from their home in the Kherson region, which then fell under Russian occupation. She accuses two Russian soldiers of raping her for 13 hours, after being out pointed as a military wife by local residents. On the parking lot of a centre for displaced Ukrainians, Elena, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, recalls the traumatic event, at times struggling to control her emotions: "They just, silently, pushed me on the bed, silently crushed me with the machine gun, undressed me".
