China on Tuesday confirmed it has sealed a wide-ranging security pact with the Solomon Islands, an agreement Western governments fear could give Beijing a military foothold in the South Pacific. Beijing also criticised a planned visit this week by top US diplomats to the Solomon Islands, saying that "the attempt to interfere and obstruct the cooperation of the island countries with China is also doomed to fail".
