After two bleak years of lock-downs and loss, members of Portela samba school get ready with excitement for the return of the famed Rio de Janeiro carnival, held for the first time since Covid-19 hit Brazil. Behind glitter and frenzy, each samba school tells a story and this year, they all bring deeply social narratives, with themes of African ancestry and the fight against racism.
