Description
Every month, Brooklyn resident Anh-Thu Nguyen has been sending her rent checks, like she has been doing for the past thirteen years. But over the last few months, the checks haven't been cashed. Her building was bought in March 2021 by a private, Wall Street-connected real estate firm called Greenbrook Partners, which asked all tenants to leave the building. Since then, she and other residents have been fighting back, suing the property company. Greenbrook owns 153 apartment buildings in Brooklyn, most of them bought during the pandemic, and it has been criticized in Congress for its predatory behavior. Across the city, other tenants like Aneta Molenda have been fighting back, organizing protests and calling out this behavior. Local politicians such as New York State Senator Jabari Brisport are advocating for a "Good Cause Eviction" bill, which would "restrict the reasons in which you can evict somebody" and implement a "cap rental increases." In New York City, rents have risen by 33 percent since January 2021. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ARRANGED IN SEQUENCES
