Description
The bunting is being put up, the children are making willow crowns and the Morris dancers are practicing in the rural English village of Bidford-on-Avon ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. It’s a scene being repeated in towns and villages across Britain as the nation prepares to mark 70 years since the Queen’s coronation, and while the celebrations will be joyful they aren’t without some stress - “It's got full-on,” says Jubilee Committee Chair Susie Meredith. “I actually wake up at three or four o'clock in the morning, and I suddenly think of something that we might have forgotten.” A torch relay, sporting events, concerts, exhibitions and a Jubilee street party are all planned to be held over the public holiday from 2nd - 5th June in the village of 6,000 people. The nearby town of Alcester also has an impressive display of bunting on its picturesque high street, while the Local Government Association estimates that some 16,000 street parties will be held, based on a poll of road closure requests from local councils.
