Description
Kazakhstan holds a referendum on whether to overhaul its constitution following the conclusion of founding leader Nursultan Nazarbayev's three-decade rule. The drive for a "New Kazakhstan", spearheaded by Nazarbayev's hand-picked successor Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, comes in the wake of deadly unrest in January which toppled the ex-President. The proposed reforms, which would decentralize the political system and outlaw nepotism, look to assuage the Kazakh people's concerns that helped to spur initially peaceful protests over fuel prices, but which ended in more than 230 deaths.
