Description
"Maybe when the next swell comes, these people will be forced to leave their homes," sighs Jean-Guy Gabriel, a fisherman in Prêcheur, northwest of Martinique, a symbol of the urgent threat of rising sea levels on the island. According to the latest figures from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), sea levels are rising by an average of 3.5 mm per year in Martinique, compared to 2.5 mm a decade ago, and the island could lose up to 5% of its land by 2100.
