Gashora Emergency Transit Centre opened in 2019 following an agreement between government of Rwanda, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the African Union to create a transit centre where refugee status requests can be externaly processed. The transit centre has so far sheltered 1,055 people seeking asylum who were transferred from Libya. 640 have already been relocated to other countries such as Norway, Canada or France under refugee status, but others have been waiting for months, or even years as their cases are processed slowly and face numerous delays.
