Description
Humanitarian aid workers gather near the town of Sarmada in the rebel-held part of Syria's northwestern Idlib province to demonstrate against any expected closure of the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey to humanitarian aid. A closure of the last aid corridor from Turkey into northwest Syria's rebel-held areas would spell "catastrophe" for millions of people, according to Mark Cutts, UN deputy regional humanitarian coordinator for the Syria crisis. He spoke ahead of a UN Security Council vote expected on July 7 to renew the world body's authorisation to deliver assistance through the Bab al-Hawa crossing before its mandate expires on July 10. "If [humanitarian] aid is interrupted at the Bab al-Hawa crossing, a humanitarian catastrophe will take place, leading civilians to starve and diseases to spread," Syria Civil Defence volunteer Nada al-Rashed says.
