Under the scorching heat of the morning sun, farmers work in a rice field in Qalyubia governorate while others harvest Italian peppers in a small but lush green plot in al-Fashn, Beni Suef, 150 km south of the capital Cairo. Despite their crucial role feeding 103 million people, Egypt's smallholder farmers – the country's lifeline in the war in Ukraine – are cash-strapped and indebted, unable to sell their harvests at markets.
