Description
Passo Stelvio summer ski centre has suspended all skiing activities since July 20 due to the security conditions of the glacier, says the resort's chief's Umberto Capitani. As a result of a long period of extremely high temperatures, with the freezing level at around 4500 metres and a shortage of snow from the previous winter, the glacier has melted quickly, pushing the company who is running the resort to temporary suspend skiing on the glacier until the temperatures drop and conditions allow for a reopening. Italy is yet another country after France and Switzerland to close summer ski resorts on the Alps because of melting glaciers, which scientists warn is a example of the effect of climate change.
