Description
In the mountains of Bolivia, Aymara shaman Roberto Usida Huanca squirts beer around a bonfire, burning fruits, sweets, incense and roots, so that Pachamama (mother earth) will reward his devotees with health and prosperity. The ritual is celebrated at dawn on the mountain called La Cumbre, about 20 km north of the city of La Paz in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. The ceremony, celebrated every 1st of August, marks the beginning of the 'month of Pachamama', and the start of preparations for the sowing season, so that agricultural production is fruitful and all economic and commercial activities, as well as health, proceed smoothly.
