In Spain, already parched under a prolonged hot spell, locals and tourists in Madrid are trying to cool off amid the extreme heat. Temperatures will breach 40C in several areas this week, with one man selling ice cream saying he has "never seen" heat like this. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
