Description
For years the residents of Ando-Kpomey village, around 65km north of Togo's capital Lome, have anarchically cut down trees in the equatorial forest in search of supplies of firewood and charcoal production for cooking. Now, as part of efforts to slow down deforestation, authorities have embarked on a campaign to promote 'improved stoves' and cookers made locally that are far more economical in their consumption of charcoal. "We used to cut down a lot of trees to use traditional stoves, and this destroyed the forest. Today, (...) the forest is growing back and is once again denser," says villager Rebecca Agbogl.
