The fire has detroyed "6,000 hectares" of pine forests near Landiras, in southwest France's Gironde, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people. The "situation remains unfavourable" says the head of Gironde's fire brigade, with "a fire front that continues to progress". SOUNDBITE
