Description
With the UK facing an amber heat warning and reservoirs running low, farmer Andrew Blenkiron, who manages the Euston Estate in Suffolk, says that he faces losing 50 percent of the yield of crops he’s unable to water, such as his fields of sugar beet. As well as the lack of water, rising energy prices have also hit his business, with the cost of electricity, used to pump water around the farm, more than quadrupling from 80,000 pounds (77,000 euros) last year to 370,000 pounds (438,000 euros) this year. He says that new reservoirs need to be built to ensure the UK can weather more than one dry year "without any challenges at all" as the frequency of droughts increases. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
