Description
Mohamed Mokrani, a former member of the National Liberation Army (ALN), followed the Evian negotiations minute by minute from the headquarters in Ghardimaou, Tunisia, where many of the 'maquisards' (Resistance fighters) had taken refuge. "For us, soldiers, officers and commanders, March 19 was just an ordinary day that had no value worth mentioning, because we were in an ongoing war," he says. The Evian Accords were signed on March 18, 1962, between France and the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA), the government-in-exile of the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN), ending the Algerian War of 1954-1962 and pathing the way for Algeria's Independence from France. Macron's visit to Algeria, set for August 25-27, has been billed as a bid to improve the strained ties between Paris and Algiers. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
