Description
A decade ago, Fairbourne, a village on the west coast of Wales, was handed a delayed death sentence. By the middle of the 21st century, it's predicted that the village will be lost to rising sea levels driven by climate change. In 2013 it was decided that the local authority, Gwynedd Council, would cease to maintain Fairbourne's flood defences and would instead relocate residents from the mid-2040s. Since this decision, the council has faced criticism from residents for its failure to detail the relocation plans, as well as the timeline it put on the process. "We were told that Fairbourne would be decommissioned in 2054", says resident, Angela Thomas, "but we weren't told where we were going to live...how people with jobs will find new jobs."
