Description
A thick white smoke, visible from several kilometres around, rises above Bakhmut: this town in the Ukrainian-controlled Donbas is still feeling the pressure from the Russian army despite the retreat of Moscow's troops in the north-east. In this large town, which has been in the immediate vicinity of the front line for several months, a five-storey apartment block was hit by a strike on Wednesday night, killing at least one person. One resident rescued by the firefighters tells of "a sound like thunder" and "a lot of broken glass": "I felt nothing, glass debris started falling on me": "People are in under the rubble, and I survived and stayed alive" he adds.
