Description
They may be thousands of miles from Moscow, but the long arm of the Kremlin is still dangerously close for the Russian exiles in Serbia who oppose the invasion of Ukraine. Critics living abroad have faced violence, threats and online intimidation. ""I had a very unpleasant situation when they wrote a letter Z on the front door" says Vladimir Volokhonskii, one of those living in Belgrade, "that was really uncomfortable, I don't know what happens next." Many Serbs have refused to condemn Russia, a historical ally, and ultranationalists have rallied in support of President Putin. Pro-Russia murals can be seen around Belgrade, depicting Putin and the Wagner Group. "I couldn't say I feel especially safe" says Volokhonskii. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
